BIBLICAL
DEFINITIONS
Before
Scripture can be interpreted properly, it is important to
properly define Biblical terminology—according to its original
Jewish meaning. The “progressive revelation” of God in the New Testament
does not invalidate the Old Testament concept of God. Both the Old
and New Testaments must agree. Here is how the Bible defines the following
terms: GOD THE
FATHER “God the Father”
identifies God as the creator and Father of Israel. In the New Testament,
it is used in the place of the Tetragrammaton (the separate vowels of
God's unknown name, interpreted as Yahweh or Jehovah). Since the apostles
were Jewish, and reverenced God’s holy name, they used this term for the
one true God of Israel, the timeless eternal Spirit who dwells in heaven,
outside of time and space—similar to how Jews use “HaShem”
today. This term is
defined in the following passages:
THE
SON Son of God,
Son of Man, Son of David Jesus is called the
“Son of God” in the Bible, not “God the Son”—a term that
implies Deity apart from the incarnation. In the New Testament,
“Son of God” is synonymous with "Son of David" or "Son of Man." Christ is
called the "Son of God" because He was born of a virgin. The
man who was born in Bethlehem is the "Son of God"—God existing in
the lesser form of a man.
CHRIST OR
“MESSIAH” The term “Christ”
is not the Divine name of Jesus. In both the Hebrew and
Greek, it means “the Anointed One.” It was a word used by Jews for any
human anointed by God, and the Son of David, the Messiah. The Deity of
God does not need to be anointed—He is the anointing
from eternity to eternity! Only in the lesser form of a man could God be
the “Anointed One.” As “Son of God,” the term “Christ” refers to the
man born of a virgin in Bethlehem.
THE HOLY
SPIRIT The
word “Spirit” in the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek means, "wind" or "breath."
The Holy Spirit is the “Holy Breath of God” that moves upon man
inside of this creation. God dwells outside of creation
in heaven. The “Holy Spirit” is the “Schekinah glory”—the timeless
God “breathing” His essence into the universe at a specific point in
time. God
calls the "Holy Spirit" "my Spirit." This proves that the
Holy spirit is not the spirit of another person, for it is the Father’s
own Spiritual essence. In the New Testament, the term “Holy Spirit” is
neuter gender, which means that the translators should have used
the word “it” instead of “He.” However, the Bible describes the Holy
Spirit speaking and having personality and will. Therefore,
the Holy Spirit is personal, yet the neuter gender is used because it is
the Father’s own spiritual essence. If we
interpret “Holy Spirit” according to Judaism—the foundation of
Christianity—the “Holy Spirit” is not a separate divine person, but the
one God of Israel moving within creation and time.
