DEFINITIONS: SON

THE SON “DIED”

Go to beginning of section

The Son—God incarnate in human flesh—did something that the Father could not do—He died! In Romans we read:

"For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."   (Romans 5:10-12)

Since God is immutable, never changing, it is impossible for die. This is true whether Oneness or Trinitarian theology is the truth. Only the body that God formed in the womb of Mary died. Since this man was God’s Son, this explains the language in this passage in Romans.

The term “Son” simply cannot refer to Deity apart from the incarnation, if the “Son” died. Yet, since the Son is God incarnate in human flesh, these words are literal, and true.

This man is the mediator of eternity, God’s timeless age. For this reason, Paul wrote that we have “joy” in God (the omnipotent, timeless Spirit) through Jesus Christ (God incarnate in human flesh.) This “joy” is the joy of the Holy Spirit, which we receive through the one who gave His life.
