DEFINITIONS: HOLY SPIRIT

THE LORD IS THAT SPIRIT

Go to beginning of section

In the book of Corinthians, the apostle Paul called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of the “Lord.” We read:

“Nevertheless when it [Israel] shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”   (2 Corinthians 3:16-18)

According to the context, the “Lord” in this passage is the Son of Man—God incarnate. We read that the “veil” will be taken away from the eyes of the Jews when they “turn to the Lord.” Although the Greek word Kurios can be used for the omnipotent Spirit of God, in this context it is used distinctly for Jesus Christ. Therefore, when Paul wrote “the Lord is that Spirit,” He acknowledged that the same person incarnate in the Son is the Holy Spirit!
