God is not a
physical being. According to Judaism—the foundation of
Christianity—God’s essence is “Spirit.” Jesus believed this concept.
In the book of John, we read:
“Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the
hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at
Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know
what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh,
and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in
spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must
worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John
4:21-24)
Jesus taught
that God was “Spirit” and was one person. He used a
singular personal pronoun for God in this passage
("Him".) The word “Spirit” in the Hebrew and Greek
means “breath” or “wind.” This word is analogous of the
fact that God is an invisible force that cannot be seen. His
existence is not based upon physical matter, but He is an
unseen substance. Therefore, Paul wrote:
“In whom we have redemption through his
blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the
invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.” (Colossians
1:13-15)
Jesus
Christ is the “image of the invisible God.” As a Jew,
Paul believed that God is a non-physical entity. He also
believed the Son of David was the image of God, because He is God
manifested in human flesh. Yet, God in the Son of Man is
physically distinct from the being of God, because He is a glorified
man. The one God of Israel, called “God the Father” in the New
Testament is an invisible Spirit that dwells in heaven outside of
time and space. His "Son" is the one true God living the life of a
man from within a seperate, human consciousness.
